Important Information

Who can attend?

Children as young as 3 months of age up to 5 years old are welcome in our Chambesy facility. Children who are 5 years and older will be registered in our Grand Saconnex pool. All levels are most welcome in both our pools. Don't hesitate to register your children even if he/she is a beginner and a little older. It's never too late to learn how to swim!

Parents in the water?

For children between 3 months and 3,5 years of age, parents are with children in the water.

When children are ready to swim by themselves (normally between 2.5 - 4 years old), they become independent swimmers. At the Chambesy, parents can then enjoy watching their children through the window, without having to get changed! At the Starling Hotel, only one parent per swimming child is allowed to wait and watch their child from the pool deck. Please note that no other non swimming children are allowed on the pool deck at the Starling (not even newborns).

How it works:

After registrations, we contact you with a spot proposal depending on level of swimming (or age). You will be in the same class for the entire camp. They will be with children of similar age/ability. Lessons are 30 minutes each in Chambesy and 40 minutes at the Starling. Lessons are in English or French. It is important that for children who are alone in the water with the teacher, they understand either French or English. For classes with parents in the water, we require the parent to understand either French or English. Please note, we are not a language camp, therefore teachers will speak the language your child is most at ease with.

How we teach?

We always demonstrate a skill to the children (rather than just tell them), so we can teach children with different language skills in the same class. Our “demonstrate, encourage, applaud, repeat” philosophy is the difference between children developing skills in the water and  resisting. It is critical that teachers are in the water, so they can instruct children with their actions as well as their voices. This also builds the child’s confidence to  try new things and make significant breakthroughs. For our younger classes, we use a lot of singing and games to keep them smiling and engaged.

Why Red Whale is different:

We ONLY teach in warm water. We recognise that it is important for children to be comfortable during swimming lessons.

Our class sizes are relatively small (for Chambesy: max 5 kids per teacher in unaccompanied lessons, and 5/6 in parent-child classes - For Starling: Maximum 6 kids per class). At the Chambesy pool,  all of our teachers are always in the water to ensure that every child (or parent) receives personal attention. At the Starling pool, teachers will be in the water if the exercice require it or if the level of the child requires a teacher to be in the water.

Kids are in the water and active for the entire lesson. There is no waiting around on the pool deck.

We follow the teaching methodology widely used in countries like Australia, USA and the UK whereby the teachers will always demonstrate skills in the water, rather than give instructions from the side of the pool.

We create a comfortable and fun environment for children.
